I read Rivals a few years ago and enjoyed every page!
Story
Follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Buddingham as their long-running rivalry comes to an end. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner previously starred in Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals). The same filming location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark.
The characters, especially Aidan Turner as the prominent journalist Declan O’Hara and David Tennant as the nasty Lord B, are great!
It’s quite difficult to compare the book and its characters to its TV adaptation, as we all have our own perceptions of how certain characters should look and act. Also, while we can read a book at our leisure, TV has to move at a pace that suits the format and doesn’t drag, so some characters or side plots may need to be interrupted for a while. That said, yes, there are differences from the book, but none so big as to spoil the overall fun and entertainment value.
Makes us love Declan as much as we hate Lord B!
The 80s music is fantastic, although one part that I found annoying was the high operatic music at the beginning, it just didn’t fit. As for all the sex scenes, yes, we can do without some, because we all have imaginations, but this wouldn’t be the book Cooper wrote. It was wonderful to see Jillie Cooper herself in the restaurant lunch scene.
She seemed to be enjoying the show and so did I
The last episode ended quite differently from the book, so I hope there’s at least one more season to see what happens to Taggie and RCB . . .
