The Day of the Jackal takes place

Story

The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living by carrying out assassinations for top pay. He soon meets his match: a dogged British intelligence officer who tracks him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. The novel is set in 1963 and concerns an assassination attempt on then French President Charles de Gaulle. The show shifts the setting to the current era. Remake of The Day of the Jackal (1973). Spy/spy/assassin movies have always been some of my absolute favorites, from earliest memories of James Bond to Mission Impossible and Jason Bourne, films like Shooter, Day of the Jackal (original) and The Jackal, Leon the Professional and the list goes on.

This is just another great series in a long list of great shows. With Eddie Redmayne at the helm, and seriously, he is phenomenal, this show is great. I’ve worked with guns most of my life, been around guns my entire life, and personally hold firearms gunsmith licenses – it’s very easy to see that they brought in subject matter experts and military personnel as consultants for this show. It certainly creates authenticity… which is damn nice to see. The entire cast seems to mesh quite well together…

it just sucks

I first saw Lashana Lynch in the latest James Bond and to be honest, I didn’t find her performance to be anything special. In fact, I thought it was awful. Unlike previous actresses of color (if that was the intention) – and let’s just go with that – she fell far short of expectations compared to the exquisite Halle Berry or even the legendary Grace Jones. She felt wooden, flat, unimaginative, frankly worthless and talentless. But I thought maybe she was just tricking James Bond and “trying it again.” But 5 episodes later… I don’t know what job she had before acting but maybe she wants to think about going back to it.

I think the casting choice for Lashana Lynch was honestly poor. Personally, Idris Elba would have been an extremely good choice as an MI6 agent. If you want a British woman of color, Christine Adams is great! So many great options and they went with a cardboard cutout. If you can basically ignore the completely hopeless Lashana Lynch, the show is great. It’s unfortunate that this is going to be a mini series rather than a multi-season show which would have been something special.

I think Eddie Redmayne should seriously consider other spy movie TV shows as it is fascinating to watch and this series would get a 10/10 if Lynch had chosen a terrible cast. A new season of Silo is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
